Already a highly competitive race for the Presidency, the anti-police brutality protests across the country have re-energized the election, thrusting the question of who Biden will select as a Vice President to the forefront of the public debate.

At a first glance, one would assume that if Biden chose a white male or female as a running mate, he would risk alienating huge swathes of Black voters — given the important role they played in helping him clinch his win in South Carolina that lead to the remarkable turnaround of his campaign from lagging to leader.

However, existing African American candidates such as Kamala Harris aren’t the optimal choice for VP given her criminal justice record which already put her under tremendous scrutiny as a Presidential candidate. As a VP pick, Kamala would put Biden at odds with the goals of the anti-police brutality protests.

Black Lives Matter, which may or may not be an accurate gauge of all African American voters, will likely significantly influence the outcome of the 2020 elections. While the official organization of BLM doesn’t endorse Presidential candidates, two of the three founders of BLM have taken different endorsements:

1. Alicia Garza endorsed Warren for President (The Hill, 2/20/20)
